Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 7.1MP MPEG4 High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

After 9 months, the buttons on the camera stopped functioning. Contacted Sanyo and was referred to their Service Provider, Skokie TV.

Contacted Skokie and shipped my camera to them in early September. Hearing nothing after 2 weeks, I contacted Skokie and learned that diagnostics had found a faulty "control unit", which needed to be ordered from Sanyo.

After 2 more weeks and no news, I contacted Skokie again and was informed that the replacement unit arrived defective and was reordered from Sanyo.

After 2 more weeks, I contacted Skokie again and was advised that they were awaiting the replacement part.

Service and communication from Skokie are unacceptable. I have now waited 6 weeks and still do not know when I will get my camera back. My 16 months old baby is walking, talking, learning... and we are missing the capture moments for which our Sanyo was intended.

Although we love the camera, would caution buyers as to the defective control unit and after-market experience with Skokie.Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2 7.1MP MPEG4 High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

JVC Everio GZ-HD5 3CCD 60GB Hard Disk Drive High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

I am returning this product because of false advertising by JVC. The specifications show that the camera support i.LINK, but this is not the case. You can plug the camera in to your PC using a 4 pin cable, but it doesn't support the capabilities of i.LINK which include ability to control the camera and get live video feeds using a PC. I wanted to use this camera as a PC camera, but it is not possible. Even if you hook it up to your computer using the other video output connectors, you cannot disable the auto-standby mode.JVC Everio GZ-HD5 3CCD 60GB Hard Disk Drive High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

DXG DXG 567VB 5.0MP HD Camcorder with 1.7-Inch Hi-Res LCD and 2x Zoom (Blue)

I have had so much fun with this camcorder. It is so fun to use when my cat and dog start wrestling or one of them does something funny or even naughty. They do not know they are being recorded and it is so funny to watch their antics over and over. This camcorder is so easy to use and is very convenient. I do not think I have ever taken so many great videos that I can so easily send out to relatives and friends. The quality of the video and the entertainment value gives this product a 5 star rating from me.DXG DXG 567VB 5.0MP HD Camcorder with 1.7-Inch Hi-Res LCD and 2x Zoom (Blue)

Sanyo Xacti HD1A 5.1MP MPEG4 High-Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

I bought this camera some years ago at the local Fry's.

At the time it seemed a good idea.

Had I known then what I know now I'd have never bought this.

Main complaint is short battery life. 2nd main complaint is

FINDING A BATTERY that is OEM and not some fly by night battery.

Guess what? If you read the owners manual you see Sanyo recommends you do

NOT leave the battery in the unit. Fine. But if you follow that advice the

built in hour/date clock expires and you have to reset it EACH TIME YOU WANT

to use the camera and have that function useful.

If you do leave the battery in the unit whilst not using it, the battery will expire

in a few days or so despite being 'turned off'. I guess keeping the date clock running just

eats up a lot of power.

As of today I looked via Google and the only true OEM listing I could

find was here at Amazon. However it is out of stock.. of course.

Google till I'm blue in the face and all I can find is 'OEM compatible' batteries.

The menus system is clumsy and had I known how clumsy I'd have not bougght it.

The rocker button that is used for many menu functions is a real pain in the rear

for anyone with large hands. It is a major annoyance to be constantly accidentally rocking

the 4 way rocker the wrong direction. I'm sure it is fine for some woman with very slender

fingers but for a man with big hands it is a mess.

My advice to anyone researching digital cameras for is to buy one that does not

require the use of a proprietary battery type. Seek one that allows use of rechargable

generic AA or similar cells. You'll be far better off if your at the least concerned about

costs and availability of the batteries years later.

I'll never buy another camera from these guys again.

That aside, it does take decent photos as long as the light is BRIGHT. Dim to slightly dim conditions forget about it.

Love the small portable size. It's easy to use, too. The zoom capability is phenomenal. Don't even need the digital zoom. HD quality picture is superb, even when played back on our big 42" HD TV. Takes very nice still pictures also. Battery life isn't bad at all. Took many short movies of the scenery on a trip to Utah. Zion National Park was amazing! I don't own this item. The only reason I bought a camcorder was for the whole purpose of not CHANGING DISKS!

GO with the JVC 20GB Everio... must be cheapier by now; and, you will get 4.5 hours ULTRA FINE quality. HD is getting over rated when it comes to recording on your personal life. (The 40 GB Everios must be more economical by now)

The Everio is compact and it has been holding strong for 3 years. Dropped it once for the first time, a week ago... Hasn't complained yet.

Wolverine MM100R mymovie HD Camcorder and 5MP Camera (Red)

I bought this camera from Costco, even though no one had reviewed it yet, because of the low price and many features.

Once I received it and returned to the Costco site to see if the tripod mount was available there, I found 4 bad reviews and began to wonder if I had made a mistake. One of the reviews mentioned poor sound quality on replay, but that was easily sorted by starting the replay over again. So I thought I'd keep it, as otherwise it seemed to work really well. Shot my first video tutorial with it and was totally satisfied.

Until...two weeks later and I'm ready to shoot my next tutorial. I set up everything, started the camera recording and put it in place and started doing my tutorial. I got all the way to the end, took the camera down and it was OFF. So I turn it back on and played back what I had filmed. Essentially, half way through, the camera turned itself off.

I figured it was a glitch, so I got myself set back up to start about where it had turned off and went through my tutorial yet again. And when I took the camera down, it was again OFF. I checked the playback and the camera had turned itself off right after I put it in place.

So this camera made a trip back to Costco. I'm very sad, because I thought for the price, this camera had so many features that are not found on similarly priced HD cameras. I loved being able to adjust for different light conditions and the 8x digital zoom compared to 2x on similar cameras. But I don't need to mess around trying to get it to stay on when it should stay on.Wolverine MM100R mymovie HD Camcorder and 5MP Camera (Red)

Sony Professional HVR-Z1U 3CCD High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom

I bought this item for $3115 based on the picture as it is on this review page. When I received the item, it was supplied without the shotgun microphone. When I called the seller, I was informed that the item is sold without the shotgun microphone. I insisted that it was a wrong item advertised. The blame was passed on to Amazon.com who put up the picture as it appeared. You are therefore misleading prospective buyers by putting up wrong pictures on your website. Otherwise I was not going to buy the item at the price I paid if it wasn't the way it was. I am disappointed.

I've owned this item for 2 years now and it has been really great.

I use it to shoot music videos and the quality of the sequences shot outdoors is very good and the colours are quite nice.

The battery life is excellent. Very easy to edit in Final Cut Express software.

The only cons are:

The depth of field is a bit tricky and not great even when you do get it to work. You could probably buy a lens for this.

It shoots very grainy in low light and requires professional lighting after sundown.

You can't move the camera fast at (eg. to do a sweeping landscape shot)- otherwise the images are grainy.

In this day and age, when everyone (except Sony, of course) is moving toward universal standards, I am disgusted to find Sony's camera produces video based on a proprietary formatting. In order to retrieve the video, you must use THEIR software... which SURPRISE!... is only provided in a Windows format. Therefore, as a Mac user I am unable to download the videos to my computer for movie creation. Sure... I can purchase "Parallels" and "windows" for a sum of about $200 more, so I can install their software, but why should I have to install that ridiculous operating system? And there are some extremely contrived work-around processes for me to get the video moved from one format to another, but I have yet to find one that actually works. If you are a Mac user.... DO NOT buy this camera; it's not worth the hassle!Sony HDR-CX7 AVCHD 6.1MP High Definition Flash Memory Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

Samsung SC-HMX10 8GB Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom (SDHC compatible)

I bought the Samsung SC-HMX-10 a year ago for filming the family during those special occasions.

Since that time, here's what I've learned as an owner of that camera:

PROS:

Size and look - The camera is small and looks sleek. It has a side-strap that is good for medium and small hands.

720p - This is a pro and a con. The pro is that it's not standard def. The con is it's not 1080p. The smaller 720p makes it easier to work with in the computer in terms of file size.

Touchscreen - I like the touchscreen and it seems intuitive and well made. It's seems big in relation to the rest of the camera.

HDMI Out - This can be hooked directly to your HDTV via an HDMI port.

Quality - The video quality looks great in most lighting. Low light situations invite video grain.

Memory - This camera has 8GB of internal memory and an expansion slot for more. I love the fact I can pull the card out and put into my computer. Too easy.

CONS:

Lens Add-Ons - The lens threads seem cheap but not any more than most cameras. I put a UV filter and a wide-angle adapter on the front and started getting vignetting on the corners. It appears that it can only handle one filter/adapter at a time.

AVCHD - AVCHD is a form of MP4 compression that isn't widely supported... still. Adobe CS3 does not natively support it. This has been a sticking point on a lot of other user reviews.

Playback Without the Camera - Your playback choices consist of directly connecting to your TV, play on your computer or burn to a Blu-Ray disc which then necessitates a Blu-Ray Player and Burner. I don't have a Blu-Ray player just yet let alone a Blu-Ray burner. I can watch on my computer no problem, but the average Joe probably wants to be able to watch these videos from a burned disc. Consider that a hidden cost of owning HD cameras.

Computer Horsepower - Again, sort of another hidden cost is the fact that HD video requires more horsepower out of your computer when editing and playback. Older computers will playback the video choppy.

On-Board Light - The on-board light is weak. It won't impress you.

A note about price and other things

I've seen this camera go for $400-$999. I have no idea why there is such elasticity to the pricing of this camera. Do yourself a favor and shop around if you really want this camera. The stills are decent quality but I don't feel they are good enough for anything other than Facebook. Extra batteries are in short supply. I've had trouble finding anyone who stocks them.

Final Thoughts

Given the chance to go back in time, I would have waited awhile to buy an HD camera. HD requires supporting equipment like Blu-Ray devices and newer computers. The camera is nice and if you can get it cheap enough, it is a great entry-level HD camera.

I got this for a 13 year old and I think it will be just fine for a 13 year old. I don't think I would use this as a family video camera. It's not the best quality, but ok for a teenager. I did test it out and it seems ok, but I didn't download the video on the computer, just played it back on the lcd. Sound seems a little low. The light seems fine and shakeyness was only when I didn't steady my hand. Overall feel of this seems a little cheaply made. It's very light until you put the 2 AA's in. I paid [...] at another "giant retailer" and I debated taking it back after reading the reviews here, but like I said, it is for a teenager, so I will probably keep it. I love this camera. I do a lot of videography for local bands, so I'm in low light conditions most of the time and the color picks up very well. The other thing that impressed me so much was that the on-camera mic is even better than a (inexpensive) boom mic I bought. I continued to use the camera's mic because of the stereo quality when a line-in isn't available. Totally recommend for anyone starting out in film/video.

Panasonic HDC-SD5 AVCHD 3CCD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilization

I've had this product for more than a year now and so far I love how crisp the pictures are with natural lights around. Outdoor is superb indoor is good. If there's a natural light from a window it'll have a great result, but the noise level is noticeable with low lightings. I love the settings that they have with intellipix and intelligent contrast and backlight compensation and a few others, it certainly helps with the low lighting situation. It reduces the noise level tremendously, but it still kind of grainy at times but it's not bad at all, just make sure you turn the all the lights in the room if you're shooting indoor at night. I love the Dvd burner that came with it, easy to use. Samsung SC-HMX20C 8GB High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

Samsung is well known for devices such as LCD TVs and cell phones. However, not many people know that Samsung makes pretty decent digital cameras and camcorders. I came from the country where Samsung started and heard about Samsung's optical products. Although they do not have a reputation like Canon or Sony, Samsung comes pretty close to the level of other popular makers of cameras and camcorders. I think the HMX20c from Samsung shows a good evidence of this. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this camcorder and started to use the HMX20c more than any other camcorder I have. So, here goes my story for you.

First of all, the HMX20c is a very Mac-friendly camcorder. The other HD camcorders that I have use AVCHD codec to record the video, and you might need to do additional jobs to work with iMovie. AVCHD files recorded in the camcorder need a conversion process to be used by iMovie, and it takes up so much space. I have a Canon HG10 hard drive based AVCHD camcorder and iMovie always converts the AVCHD files to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) to use in iMovie. So I gave up using iMovie and used the Ulead DVDFactory on a Windows PC. However, the HMX20c records files on a flash memory (SDHC card) in H.264/MPEG4 format that iMovie loves to handle. AVCHD files alone from the HD camcorder cannot be recognized by iMovie without the conversion, however, MP4 files from the HMX20c have no problem being used directly on iMovie. I really like this and thank Samsung for choosing H.264/MPEG4 codec.

The weakness of the consumer level HD camcorder is the performance in low light. The HMX20c uses a comparatively larger CMOS (1/1.8 inch) than other HD camcorders (1/2.5 to 1/5 inch CMOS or CCD). This means the HMX20c is better in low light performance since the size of the CMOS (or CCD) is critical to accept lights, and it uses a 49mm lens, which is pretty big for a camcorder like this. So the HMX20c shows a pretty decent performance in indoor shots. I shot the video in our living room and church side by side with the Canon HG10. The HG10 also is a very good camcorder for indoor shot, however, the HMX20c is a lot better. I could notice that the shots from the HMX20c shows less grainy picture than the HG10. I take most of my videos indoors, so this is a very important factor for me. Also, I do not have any complaint about the picture quality of daylight shots. Most full HD camcorders that I see on the market already provide more than spectacular pictures and the HMX20c is no exception. The 6.4 mega pixel CMOS really does the job.

The HMX20c is a very beautiful camcorder. Its piano gloss barrel shape body looks great, and I have been always asked about the camcorder whenever I use it in public. It is very easy to grip and fits my in my hand nicely. And the user interface of a rotating LCD screen is pretty intuitive. The control menus that I use the most (white balance, video resolution, storage option, etc) are located on the root so I can use them in a single touch (LCD is a touch screen type). Some people might prefer the jog-dial like control, however, I prefer the touch screen interface because it is quick to access the features.

Another convenient feature that the HMX20c offers is that it allows to record the video in 480p SD (standard definition). Most HD camcorders only allow to record in HD and this SD recording feature can be very convenient if you want to take the video for web pages or other occasions that do not require highest resolution video recording. And the ability to take slow motion shot for 10 second is a plus for me. I will use this feature to monitor my golf swing.

There are a few drawbacks of the HMX20c. It does not have a HDMI port in it. If you want to connect the HDMI cable, you have to connect it to a cradle. And you cannot use a thick, high capacity battery because the battery is inserted inside of the camcorder and the space is already fixed for a battery. Unless the battery can have more capacity in a given size, you cannot expect to use a long lasting high capacity thick battery.

I was concerned about the lacking of optical image stabilization (the HMX20c uses a electric image stabilization) in the first place. Fortunately, I take most of my videos on a tripod so I did not recognize it. Even when I did not use a tripod, my shots were great and I do not miss optical image stabilization now.

Overall, the HMX20c is a great flash memory camcorder. I really like the low light performance and bright lens (f1.8-2.5). No motorized part inside gives very silent video without any buzzing noise. I have sold other HD camcorders that I had, and I do not miss them. The HMX20c is my only camcorder now, and this shows how much I like the HMX20c. Good job, Samsung.Samsung SC-HMX20C 8GB High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

Sony HDR-UX1 AVCHD 4MP High-Definition DVD Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

Picked up one of these about a year after it's release and at a substantial savings vs. when it was first released. Looked at it's replacements the ux5 and ux7 and decided that this model probably fit in between them as the ux5 seemed to have lost features and the ux7 gained. As the price was far cheaper then either, I decided to take the plunge.

Pros:

Very solidly made. This may be a con if you are looking for something light as it is fairly heavy, but the solid feel I think is nice.

Shoots great SD footage and HD footage converts to SD with the included software. Far better picture then the entry and mid level SD camcorders. Nice if you are going to be sending something to someone else, who may not be set up to view the disks in their native format.

In the proper light the HD footage is very nice. Not broadcast quality nice, but still much better then SD footage. Both my parents remarked seperately on how clear the picture was when they first saw it playing on a HD set.

Large 3.5" screen.

Can be edited somewhat with included software, but is very basic.

A hotshoe for adding a light.

Straight to DVD can be nice if you have the means to play the new format (ie blu-ray player or very powerful computer)

Sound is very clear. I'm not an audiophile, but even I noticed the crystal clear sound and lack of any internal noise when I played back my recordings.

Cons:

Digital image stabilizer good but not great, optical would have been nicer.

You need a very fast processor (duo core). I have a P4 3.0ghz, seperate video card, with 2mb of ram and it cannot handle the format well at all. The ram is not the limiting factor, but the processor is. In checking my system utilities, my CPU is maxed out at 100%, with only about 400MB of ram being used. Hence I am getting dropped frames in playback. Also if you wish to take advantage of the DL disks (DVD+R DL's only) you need a DVD drive capable of reading DL disks, which again would limit a lot of computers over 1 1/2 - 2 years old.

Indoor shots full of noticeable noise. Again outdoor well lit video is very nice. Indoors is still nicer then SD, but the noise is noticeable. I'm adding the sony light that goes on the hotshoe which should help.

For the price this is offered at now, It shoots as nice an SD picture as the SD only camcorders priced at or above this model. That you pick up HD is a nice bonus, and in the right conditions you can get great video and audio. Sony HDR-UX1 AVCHD 4MP High-Definition DVD Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

JVC Everio GZHD3 3CCD 60GB Hard Disk Drive High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

I bought this as a second camera for some corporate testimonials. It has been a huge pain trying to find any of the features I need, if they exist at all. The autofocus is choppy and never really locks on. So, usability, pretty terrible.

But even on top of that, back at my computer, I try importing the videos into Final Cut Express 4 (FCE), and the files are the silly and useless .TOD files (why no .MOVs, JVC?). I search the web looking for a converter, or a way to import them. I find a FAQ on JVCs website which tells me I have to download and install 3 separate files from 3 separate places, and one of the links is all in another language and the link is bad. Essentially, I am at a loss now. There are a million .TOD to .MOV converter websites, but they all look super shady. So my options now are try downloading some shifty-looking third party software just to use these files, or not use them at all. JVC has put me in a seriously crappy situation. I will be returning this device immediately, and hopefully I can find a way to still use these files.

In summary: "HEY, THIS JVC CAMCORDER IS ON SALE. SHOULD I BUY IT?" Answer: "No! It's like buying a car that only takes gas sold at one gas station, 200 miles away. It doesn't matter what the car does if you can't use it."JVC Everio GZHD3 3CCD 60GB Hard Disk Drive High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Sony HDR-HC5 4MP MiniDV High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

I use this camcorder at work on a daily basis. It's portable, but slightly heavy. A carrying case is a must.

I've used it primarily to shoot video for editing in Final Cut Pro. FCP can recognize and directly control it via the Capture and Log window (when using the Firewire connection). The picture quality is great, especially when shooting in 1080. A tripod, however, yields better and more professional results.

We've used several of these camcorders extensively for almost two years, and they're all still going strong. So, the build quality is definitely there.

Panasonic HDC-SD100 Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom

This handy flash camera does everything advertised. The video is smooth with vivid colors. Although not as small as the Canon SF200, this camera is large enough for the average sized hand to get a good grip and keep a steady shot. This Panasonic is one of the few camcorders in this price range with an EVF, a feature which I prefer to use. For those who like a bit of manual control, Panasonic's implementation is very intuitive. Like any other AVCHD camcorder, you will need good software to render the video. The HD writer software that came with the camera is adequate, but Apple's iMovie, or products from Pinnacle and Adobe are better.Panasonic HDC-SD100 Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom

Sony HVR-V1U 3-CMOS 1080i Professional HDV Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom

Generally I do like this camcorder, however if you expect to shoot indoors (or out) with less than a 60 watt bulb within 1 foot of the subject....not 2 feet mind you.... all you will get is "grainy" video. Very poor at early morning or late evening shots outdoors. Sony claims a 4 lux rating.....more like 40. I'm looking for a light now, but not sure if the outdoor shots will ever work. I film wildlife in low light......will probably have to trade this camera in.

However.....with a 60 watt (or greater) bulb close, the picture quality is exceptional. Same outdoors in full sunlight. The built-in filters work very well, and the programming features are easy to use(very much styled after 10 year old Sony cameras.....very few changes which allowed me to use this camera with little manual reference). I do love the fact that my 10 year old handycam batteries interchange with this camera....Kudos to Sony. Also Kudos for using 3 mediums for recording......tape(which only cost about $2 each at present, a few bucks more for HDV), Memory stick (4 gig max) or the optional hard drive. The remote from my old handycam has more features than the new one supplied....but crazy enough...the new programming supports the old remote.....another kudo.

Photos are very respectable, and clarity from the Carl Zeiss lens is legendary and many extra lens' are available(I bought a wide angle and 2X for about $75 as an experiment/starter, but the quality was soooo much better than I expected that unless I shoot for TV....I'm not planning to upgrade anytime soon) About 300 photos per gig of memory card will store. The camera shoots stills and video simultaneously or seperate(still shots at a higher quality) The supplied mic is adequite, but I believe there are upgrades in my future soon.

My only real issue is the light requirement. Good luck. captn

11/20/09 updated..

I've since noticed the 20X zoom on this camera seemed to be a little short of what I was after, so I purchased a 2X telephoto lens for this camera and didn't notice a difference in distance magnification. Thinking the lens was defective, I purchased a second telephoto lens this time 4.5X. Still no difference except picture quality was decreased. Both lenses claimed to be for camcorders.

I checked the distance at 75 yards with a 26X rifle scope against this camera's 30X boost and found the camera was considerably short of magnification to the target....as in about half the magnification as the scope.

Basically, I guess I'm saying that long distance filming of over 200 yards is very compromised. Actually, if you want to zoom in on a critter's eyes at over 50 yards, you may be disapointed.

I also tried a 1X wide angle lens which worked very well....just no telephoto improvement.

If there is information out there from someone who has increased the power of magnification on this camera, I'd like the info. Thanks captn

Sony Professional HVR-A1U CMOS High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

the audio is fantastic the extra place to hook up mikes and stuff is one of the best features. It also can convert hdv to dv or keep it as HDV some other cool effects include sepia shooting, blurred shots, as well as black and white. The touch screen is very nice to have, but it is nothing revolutionary. The picture quality is just OK. i have seen much better quality film on cheaper models. It shoots in a max of 1080i. Night vision is another cool feature. Although, i have found that the infrared DOES NOT shoot well past 15 ft nor does it shoot through car windows(inside to out) unless outside of vehicle is exposed to light. So far no problems with the camera, but something that is very important that i almost overlooked is the fact that the picture in a dim area is very poor even with the exposure adjusted.Sony Professional HVR-A1U CMOS High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

Panasonic HDC-HS9 AVCHD 3CCD 60GB Hard Drive High Definition Hybrid Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

This is my first digital camcorder purchase. I was lucky enough to get it at a huge discount when Circuit City (sorry amazon) was closing its doors. After using it on a road trip: outdoors, indoors, in a moving car, in a cave - I would have gladly paid full price. The software that comes with the camcorder leaves much to be desired. I use Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate and it works great. The movies and pictures that I have captured have been nothing short of excellent. There is a low-light mode and it works great. The USB hook up is quick and easy and the quality of the videos are amazing. Panasonic HDC-HS9 AVCHD 3CCD 60GB Hard Drive High Definition Hybrid Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Sony HDR-UX5 4MP AVCHD DVD High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

The reviews here are well done and pretty comprehensive. Check out the CONs before you buy. The Mini-DVD's won't go in my Macbook, which I should have realized before buying. I thought for sure I could pop the dvd's in and use Handbrake to grab the clips. You can't, and only 15 minutes of HD video on a DVD is not practical at all...

AND -- I'm also VERY disappointed because my camera died 91 days after I bought it, which means it costs me $165 (plus tax and shipping) to send the camera to Texas to get it fixed. I bought it in Feb. 2009 for $359.00Sony HDR-UX5 4MP AVCHD DVD High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

JVC Everio GZHD7 3CCD 60GB Hard Disk Drive High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

The proof is in the pudding.

I shot an entire feature-length documentary using a JVC GZ-HD7U, a pair of Schriber shotgun mics (Model SA-568ZM) strapped to it and plugged into its stereo input jack using a Y connector, and a GLIDECAM 2000 Pro.

The documentary subject required RAPID deployment of camera and sound equipment on location with little or no advanced notice. The portability of this camera made it ideal for these demanding shooting schedules.

The site where the majority of shooting was done required extreme mobility in small spaces. This camera was small enough and light enough to maneuver around with, even when the shotgun mics were strapped to it and all of that rig was mounted on the GLIDECAM.

With the documentary being shot in multiple locations - indoors and outdoors - using only available lighting (no additional artificial lighting was required for any part of the documentary shoot), this camera performed perfectly well for all lightng situations encountered.

Having limited idle-time intervals between shooting sessions - typically as little as 1 hour - downloading recorded video from the camera to mass storage (I used 4 1-terabyte WINBOOK drives hooked up to a Toshiba Satellite laptop) was a breeze.

As for battery capacity, I managed just fine using only two JVC Battery Packs (BN-VF823U) and one JVC AA-VF8 charger. Battery level indicators on the camera were delightfully obvious. Shooting schedules for the documentary typically ran from sunup to well beyond sundown and by always having one of the batteries in the charger while shooting with the other - switching batteries as needed - I never, in more than 100 hours of shooting for the documentary, found myself holding a useless camera with no juice available to operate it.

Durability of the camera was excellent. It never got dropped but it did get its share of bumps during the shoot and none of them damaged or negatively affected its performance whatsoever. It was operated in extreme temperature situations ranging from freezing to +100 degree, high-humidity summer temps without a hitch or glitch.

I have never rated any product I have purchased before in my life 100% five stars across the board. I can make these ratings for the Everio GZ-HD7U with complete confidence and just cause derived from long hours of hands-on, heavy field use in shooting the documentary.

Want to see the pudding? Just watch the documentary "Harley & Annabelle - Living Legends in Erick, Oklahoma" available at [...] to see how well this camera performed for the project.

Panasonic HDC-SD1 AVCHD 3CCD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

I am a film student who has worked with a good many MiniDV cameras, a few internal hard drive cameras, and on one occasion a DVD burning camera. I did a lot of research before purchasing a factory refurbished HDC-SD1 online.

This camera is TINY! It is so tiny that it can be difficult to hold the device still, although the digital image stabilization feature can help quite a bit. The camera is lightweight enough to sit on one of those miniature tabletop tripods with the flexible legs that are often sold for photographic use.

It has also produced some of the highest quality video I have ever seen. When I got it I had never watched a blue-ray disk in my life, so the first footage I shot was indeed the highest quality video I HAD ever seen. It records interlaced video, so there are disconcerting scan lines that appear when viewing the footage on a computer screen. These are not visible when watching on an HDTV or viewing the footage off of a blue-ray or DVD.

The color is fabulous as the device utilizes three color chips (one for each of the primary colors, instead of just one for all three). Most 3CCD cameras are far more expensive and do not perform as well in low light conditions. The HDC-SD1 is indeed very good in low light. When the low light mode is on the light from my laptop monitor allows me to capture the contents of an otherwise completely dark room quite well. You can also toggle the intensity of the LCD back light to save battery in low light situations or brighten it when shooting in sunlight or under movie lights.

There are many nifty options such as being able to turn off the rec light and a "zebra mode" which outlines areas which are currently completely washed out (warning you of over exposed back lighting situations). You can also disable digital zoom so the camera will not zoom past 12x and reduce the image quality by doing so. You can also disable the zooming microphone if you want to record someone talking in the foreground while zooming in on something over their shoulder.

The lens housing is threaded so you can attach different lenses and lens filters to the device. The battery cover has a small rubber panel which can be moved to allow a cable to pass out of the battery compartment so you can use an external battery pack.

There are some drawbacks to this device:

The manual focus is barely usable unless you are filming from a stationary tripod and don't mind focusing slowly since you have to use the thumb-joystick to (slowly) adjust the focal length. The manual focus switch is, however, set up to easily allow you to briefly engage the auto focus and then return immediately to manual setting.

You can not use USB mode without the AC adapter being plugged in. This can be frustrating in certain circumstances when you might want to attach the device to a computer while running from the battery. Also for some reason the AC power port is underneath the flip-out LCD screen, so you have to have the LCD screen out while the camera is on AC power. The HDMI out, Component out, and Microphone ports are also situated underneath the LCD.

The device can only record files up to four gigabytes in size. Once you have recorded a file that big the camera stops recording and you have to press record again. A four gigabyte file is usually around forty minutes in length, but if you are trying to record an entire play, musical performance, or sporting event you are forced to stop and restart the recording after you have reached four gigs worth of continuous recording time. Of course, the camera only comes with a four gig card so unless you are planning on buying larger ones this problem doesn't arise.

The device does not have an accessory mount so you can not attach conventional shotgun microphones or camera lights to the top. It also can not provide phantom power to condenser microphones and only has a 1/4 inch mic jack.

Compared to the video quality, the quality of the still shots it takes are not so good, although you can take stills and shoot video simultaneously.

In extremely quiet environments the top mounted zoom toggle can be heard clicking in the recording. The cooling fan (the only moving part in the camera) is sufficiently quiet as to not be captured by the microphone.

Most of these drawbacks are simply the price you pay for such a compact video camera! Only in very certain circumstances do any of these issues cause much trouble, but I wanted to go over them thoroughly so nobody is surprised by them.

All things considered this is still one of the best solutions for a super-small digital video camcorder which can record 1080i video and 5.1 surround sound. I am quite happy with this device, and am even considering purchasing another unit to be able to shoot from multiple angles at once in matching quality.Panasonic HDC-SD1 AVCHD 3CCD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Sometimes you get what you pay for. The Veho while is a great value for an HD camera, you must record in 720P to enable the anti-jitter feature to get a decent handle held video recording. Also outdoor recording is difficult in bright sunlight as the screen is hard to see.

But then again for $159, it does get you clear HD videos with 5X zoom (while also hard to use in realtime). I'm keeping mine for the price, I'll just use a tri-pod more and live with the limitations.

If you have kids and want to use it allot, you may want to set up to a higher priced unit. Veho VCC002HDKUZO 1080P Super HD Camcorder

Panasonic HDC-SD9 AVCHD 3CCD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

I bought this video camera about 2 years ago because I thought it was top-of-the-line back then, at a reasonable price. The picture quality was good, and I loved the size, but I recently sold it on eBay and bought a Canon HF-200 for the following reasons: 1) I absolutely hated the Panasonic's joystick toggle on the inside panel...not ergonomic at all, confusing to use, I wanted the touch controls on the screen itself, 2) on more than one occassion my wife and I both thought we were recording when, in fact, we were not. The Panasonic's screen info was always confusing, and we missed several very important moments due to the confusion. The main problem is that when you turn the camera on the screen says "Recording to card". It's stupid because there is nothing else besides the card it can record to, and my wife often thought it mean it was literally recording, i.e., it was shooting video, when in fact it was not. You still had to press the Record button.

So be warned there are some serious usability issues with this camera: the joystick on the inside panel, and the info screen. Also, the surround-sound is totally useless for everyday recording of family events. When we played video back on our home theather it produced a huge, unnecessary echo effect.

So do your research and compare notes. Btw, the Canon has a 15x zoom, that is the other nice thing. And the HF-200 is a good price! I sold my HDC-SD9 for $305 on eBay.Panasonic HDC-SD9 AVCHD 3CCD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Canon XH A1 1.67MP 3CCD High-Definition Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom

I've had this camera since 2007. I consider myself a prosumer filmmaker and not a cinematographer. My review is not applicable to professionals but geared towards a niche demographic who can afford not having technology be a culprit to better art. Being a director, I consider camerawork one of many pieces of filmmaking. Such philosophy shows in my review and films, by the way.

One of the first lessons I learned is not having an audience distracted by the quality of the presentation, i.e. video. I can't say the XHA1 makes a film look great. I can say it makes it look not cheap - not recorded from a hand held picked up at W-mart or B-Buy. Post process editing, lighting, cinematography aside you can find better cameras. However, the price point isn't gradual its a giant leap. Being a proponent of Canon, I was quite satisfied with my decision with the XHA1 knowing I couldn't spend anymore.

While there are reasons to shoot in SD or even 4:3, there is no sense to deny yourself HD. Without explaining the advantageous of HD, I'll focus reviewing the camera and say the video looks great in capturing minute details. 16:9 is the only resolution with 24 or 30fps. Image stabilization helps hand-held look near tripod quality. Hint: do not use IS while on a tripod at risk of having the floating camera effect. Since I abhor the "shaky camera" style, I cannot review the differences between IS and not when looking to present that technique.

The camera is as auto or manual control as you like. Many of my imperfections I remedy post-process. Because I compete in timed projects, I practice guerrilla style filmmaking not having the luxury for all the bells and whistles to set up a scene optimally. But they are there when I need them. I shoot mostly wide angle and choose to dolly in/out of my subjects. There is fish-eye effect, keep in mind. You can start shooting in two conveniently placed buttons depending how you wish to hold the camera. There are two levers to control zoom. One fast, the other slow. Favorable to your desired camera technique.

Microphone: It's okay with a little tinniness. Probably one of the weaknesses. I purchased a third-party shotgun mic from Amazon and moved the quality from a C+ to a B.

Durability: The record button on top of the handle is a little screwed up. The spring underneath is worn and sometimes the button doesn't pop up in its place and is pinned under the chassis. Disappointed since I don't use the camera that often and that button even less. Other than that, it holds up fine. Be very careful to never to touch the LCD with your fingers. The smears linger and any pressure smudges the image. The monitor is a guide, judge your work after you pull from miniDV.

Still photography: Others are discouraged if not disappointed that Canon offered a simple, no-brainer feature to a digital commodity. For me, its a feature of convenience and not a substitute for professional DSLR photography. But it is nice on occasion to frame a subject in widescreen. The shutter is noticeably delayed and the quality is film grainy. You will need a separate memory card. I use the camera as a tool to capture moments. Sometimes, a still image is more appropriate.

Battery life: I purchased a larger spare battery from a third-party. You also have the luxury to record and have AC power. The charger works quickly.

I bought a set of filters, again from Amazon. One for fluorescent lighting, one for Neutral Density, and UV to protect the camera. Though the camera has a built in ND filter with feedback, I've encountered such bright days it wasn't enough. The UV lens seemed to make sense to protect your investment until I noticed reflections from the video in my video.

Camera envy: I didn't buy this camera to look cool. I was serious about my endeavors in filmmaking. But since I acquired the camera, companies including Canon are coming up with HD cameras cheaper and of higher resolution as the XHA1. True, they're for consumers and tourists but I do wonder if the benefits of the XHA1 will depreciate. (In fact, I will acquire Canon's latest models after they come out in April). But I'll be honest. If you're going to lead a team of talent and film crew to shoot a project that will be shown in public in a cinema somewhere, best you look the part. No different than your actors. When you take this camera out for action it demands serious attention. Actors know at first sight this isn't home movies. When they see you spent money to capture their appearance and performance they'll feel as serious as you.Canon XH A1 1.67MP 3CCD High-Definition Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom

Canon HR10 AVCHD 3.1MP High Definition DVD Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Actually, it probably is outdated. The DVD format is not the most efficient way to go. But the quality of the shots I've gotten with this camera are awesome for the price I paid. I'm willing at this point to get the quality and do a little extra work in the post-production phase to convert the video.

It took a bit a bit to figure out the best way to get the video, in either SD or HD format off the disks and onto our editing machine. We used Any Video Converter (Free) to convert the files to a more editable format.

The quality of the camera when used with proper lighting is amazing for a single CMOS camera. It does have issues with poor lighting. It will become grainy, especially when working under red lights (like what we had in our haunted house).

The limited time that can be captured (especially under HD) per disk can be a problem if you just want to shoot all day long and not worry about changing disks. If you want to make webisodes/independent movies its not really that big of a problem if you manage disk space adequately and use DL disks.

There are also plenty of 37mm lenses that can screw onto the front of this thing but once it is attached BE CAREFUL. Its not a solid mounting system like you'd get with a prosumer/professional camera and I could image a good wack on the lens breaking the camera threads, lens and camera housing quite easily.

The two biggest things that I don't like are the lack of any support on Canon's website. I would have liked to have seen a firmware update available by now that would make increase the battery life, add additional presets, or improve focus detection. Not that any of those things are terrible now, but firmware updates can always make those things better.

The other problem that I have with the camera is that to capture pictures you'll need to buy a miniSD card. Not SD, SDHC, or even microSD...but miniSD. A dead format for cards. So if you buy this camera don't think that the plethora of SD cards you have laying around will cover you. You'll need to buy a miniSD card or two from Amazon at the same time.

Great HD camera. This is my first camcorder I have ever owned and I love being creative with the HV20. When I first noticed the quality when I plugged the camcorder into an HD TV I was amazed..we all were! It can be crystal clear. Outside footage definitely looks the best. It captures great detail. The footage is rarely shaky compared to other cameras. I got this camera at a great price too so it has been worth every penny so far. The zoom is nice mostly smooth. It fits good in the hand. Very easy menu to customize your settings. The 24 fps is really cool everything you shoot has the ability to look like a film! pretty cool. JVC Everio GZ-X900 AVCHD HD Flash Camcorder w/5x Optical Zoom

After VHS, MiniDV, and MiniDVD, this is my 4th generation of camcorder. The video quality is simply great. The 5X zoom ratio is sufficient for most uses. Software supplied covers major basic chores. Tried few video processing 30 days download software and none of them recognizes the camera, but some can use the file produced by it, e.g. the .MTS AVCHD HDCAM format.

JVC hinted in printed paper manual that files can be archived into an external USB hard drive without use of a computer. The "Accessory Guide" recommends Seagate FreeAgent Desk disc. Printed guide has only 44 English pages, but electronic copy of seemingly the same document is twice longer, and contains chapter with detailed step-by-step instructions how to copy camcorder contents to an external compatible USB hard disc, without use of a computer. However, I was unable to backup files directly from camcorder to external USB drive, neither Seagate nor Western Digital USB discs are recognized. Perhaps due to the two male/female hookup USB cables used. The requred menu "Video Backup" never shows up on the camcorder LCD.

Surprisingly the Backup menu shows up when Everio is connected to Western Digital WD TV Live electronic media player using single cable since normal size USB connector exists on WD TV Live, but not on any external USB drive I have. The HD TV Live device has no internal storage, just the pass through video to a HDTV or other USB disc. This concluses that the combination of 2 USB cables (female/male), to make one cable with USB mini male on both ends may not provide all lines and proper connection. WD TV Live media player finds and plays AVCHD encoded video files directly from the camcorder connected via USB port.

This is amazing why the cable industry did not produce yet an USB cable that would have Mini USB male connector on both ends.

I noticed there is a lot more to this camcorder that is not explained in poorly written documentation. E.g. menu Low Light shooting shows up momentarily, but I was not able to open it, since it disapeared during menu scrolling. This setting could possibly solve low light problems that some people complained about.JVC Everio GZ-X900 AVCHD HD Flash Camcorder w/5x Optical Zoom

DXG 567V 5.0MP HD Camcorder with 1.7-Inch Hi-Res LCD and 2x Zoom (Black)

I purchased the DXG 567V Value Pack at Walmart for $30 plus tax (on clearance) - for the price it is an Excellent Value.

Value pack came with 4 AA rechargeable batteries, recharger, AV cables Software (ArcSoft Total Media Extreme) 2GB SD card, mini tripod and the DXG 567V video camera.

This unit takes both video and still photos

Plus: records on SD cards up to 16GB cards, Low cost ($30 for me) kit has all the things a person would need to start taking photos and videos

Negs: Quality is of the sub $50 type camera. No optical zoom (it does have digital zoom but I would not recommend using it)

Overall an excellent value if you can get the value pack for under $40

Its a great camera you may want to carry on your person on in your car.

DXG USA DXG-535VK HD Riviera 720p High-Definition Camcorder Luxe Collection, Black

Recently I mentioned to my wife that we should get an inexpensive camcorder to replace our old, never used VHSc camcorder. Well, she found the DXG-535V and ordered one. When it arrived I opened the package and saw right away that I was not going to be using this camcorder. She ordered the black camcorder, but it has rhinestones on the side! Since I take most of the pictures and videos in the family, I informed her that if we kept this unit, that task would now fall to her. I was not going to use this "girly" camcorder. I swear that this unit was designed for the teenage girl market!!

Regardless of my initial impression, I found that the camcorder is not very well made. It takes four AAA batteries, which cannot last very long, but worse yet, the batteries are locked in place using a hinged plastic door with two very small plastic clips. I previously had a Minolta camera with a similar design and the clips broke off after three battery replacements, and I really doubt that these will last much longer. In addition, getting the door to close evenly, and securely, took quite a bit of effort.

I also found that my hands were just way too large to work with this camcorder. Rotating the buttons, adjusting the zoom, pressing record, etc proved to be very awkward. Again, I think the target customer was teenage girls, not guys with large fingers and hands.

As far as the movies and pictures go....think throwaway digital camera. The pictures were not very clear and the movies were rather "flat" looking, there was no depth to the movies. Overall, this camcorder seemed more like a toy, than a real camcorder.DXG USA DXG-535VK HD Riviera 720p High-Definition Camcorder Luxe Collection, Black

Kodak Zx1 HD Pocket Video Camera (Pink)

This camera is a great deal for the price. It takes relatively good video, not great. The low battery light came on after 20 minutes of use on the highest setting. My one frustration is that there seems to be no way to see how full the memory card is when it is in the camera. The manual is not very good and you have to go on their website to download the full version. Even this did not really tell me much about accessing the memory card. I wish there was some sort of cover for the lens. It could easily be scratched which would ruin the camera. Overall I am very happy that I bought this camera. It is pretty easy simply to record and playback, and very easy to transport.Kodak Zx1 HD Pocket Video Camera (Pink)
