Canon VIXIA HF100 Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

I love this camera for its portability and ease of use, but I just wish it had a better picture in low light. The picture looks pretty grainy when filming in low light - kind of disappointing as we bought it to record our first child. Most of children's early life shots are in low light! Overall, it's a great HD camera for the price.Canon VIXIA HF100 Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Kodak Zx1 HD Pocket Video Camera (Yellow)

This camera is a great deal for the price. It takes relatively good video, not great. The low battery light came on after 20 minutes of use on the highest setting. My one frustration is that there seems to be no way to see how full the memory card is when it is in the camera. The manual is not very good and you have to go on their website to download the full version. Even this did not really tell me much about accessing the memory card. I wish there was some sort of cover for the lens. It could easily be scratched which would ruin the camera. Overall I am very happy that I bought this camera. It is pretty easy simply to record and playback, and very easy to transport.Kodak Zx1 HD Pocket Video Camera (Yellow)

Canon VIXIA HF10 Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 16 GB Internal Flash Memory and 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

I'm happy with this camcorder. Gives impressive video quality. It's also good for still photography if your digital camera battery dies. I did it sometime & I can say picture quality is too impressive. It does not have good wind filter. Its not too bulky but also not too compact. Lastly, downloading still pictures to computer is tough as we don't do it regularly and the manual does provide steps in detail. Its frustrating. Overall a good camcorder.Canon VIXIA HF10 Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 16 GB Internal Flash Memory and 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Canon VIXIA HG20 AVCHD 60 GB HDD Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom

This camcorder offers what few HDD camcorders offer--a place to plug in an auxiliary microphone! This makes the Canon VIXIA HG20 AVCHD a perfect, versatile choice that provides the ability to record high quality sound to match the high definition picture.Canon VIXIA HG20 AVCHD 60 GB HDD Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom

Sony HDR-FX7 3-CMOS Sensor HDV High-Definition Handycam Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom

This camera has tons of features that I haven't tried yet. I taped a hockey tournament and banquet and found the camera very easy to use. I like the dual zoom feature-the zoom on the side goes slow/fast depending on how far you push the bar. On the handle you can select slow or fast zoom and thats nice for doing music videos as it pans in and out at a fixed rate regardless of how far you push the bar. The sound recording is great but it picks up voices in back of the camera too so I'm going to invest in a directional mic. The viewfinder swivels almost 90 degrees so you can tip the camera almost straight up such as filming the release of balloons. You dont have to bend your head all the way back as you do with fixed viewfinders. All the controls are easy to use with your hand under the grip strap. The lens hood has a built in lens cover which is a nice touch. This camera does the 1080i HD and uses iLink to download to your computer. I use Studio 12 to make my movies but studio 12 requires 2.66 GHz of processing power for HD and I only have 1.8GHz. The camera can convert your HD to standard def with a built-in setting on the iLink screen. Sony HDR-FX7 3-CMOS Sensor HDV High-Definition Handycam Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom

Canon VIXIA HF S11 HD Dual Flash Memory Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

This is the first time I bought Conon Camcorder. I am a big fan of Canon camera. Over the years I have bought more than 10 canon cameras. After my SONY camcorder died, I decided to switch to Canon camcorder based on reviews.

I got this camcorder last October when it just come out. It costs me more than $1400. I have to say it is such a waste of money. I was so disappointed with the picture quality. It is just not clear. When you zoom it, everything is blurring. The pictures make me feel dizzy when I watch them on the computer or TV. I ordered it online without testing it because I trusted the reviews. It was a big mistake! Because of my busy schedule I forgot to return it right away. Now it is too late to return it. I end up had to buy another one (different brand) which costs a lot less and give me a better picture quality.Canon VIXIA HF S11 HD Dual Flash Memory Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

Aiptek A-HD 720P 8MP CMOS High Definition Camcorder (Silver)

This is a fantastic camera, particularly for such a great price. It does a fantastic job at recording at 720p, and it has built in standard resolution modes for things like DVDs, or the web, so you just pick the one you want - very handy. I read a couple of reviews about these types of cameras that say that it is hard to stabilize the picture without a tripod - I don't know what they are talking about. The video is very stable, no jittering at all. The menus are easy to navigate, it is light and fits well in your hand, and the screen is great and can be moved around so you still see what you are shooting no matter what the angle. It records in low light very well. Great extra features like video out, HD video out, audio visual in (so you can record from a tv, gamebox or other source). It comes with all the cables you would need for any of the options. And as for being well-made - our kitten got hold of it (he liked the little handstrap) and ran it around the house, banging into walls and such, and it still works great, not a scratch on it. The only drawback is the sound - it needs a foam cover on it or something because it picks up sound almost too well - there is no filter. I would definitely recommend this!Aiptek A-HD 720P 8MP CMOS High Definition Camcorder (Silver)

Aiptek A-HD+ 1080P High Definition Camcorder (Silver)

I purchased this camcorder while researching other high end camcorders and decided not to spend too much as I am into still photography and could allocate the resources into my passion rather than in a camcorder that I will not be using much. I am very impressed with the build, quality, ease of use and battery life. For the price that I paid for, the results are outstanding. I did not expect this quality from such a cheap item. However, I have to tell you that if you are viewing the downloaded files in a non-64 bit machine, the video looks choppy. It's only after I got a new 64 bit machine and viewed them again that I was able to tell the difference.

The only downside that I find with this camcorder is the zoom in and zoom out feature. Not very impressive range or quality. But for the price, I can't complain either. I would recommend to anyone who is not intending to be a pro in videography. Aiptek A-HD+ 1080P High Definition Camcorder (Silver)

Sony HDR-CX520V 64GB Flash High Definition Camcorder (Black)

I was used to the previous generation of Sony's hard drive-based camcorders therefore I expected a lighter cam but this model is insanely light and the picture quality improved a little bit. I really like the recharger is built into the cam, no more hassles of traveling with a separate base/recharger.

Also the GPS capabilities are welcome. I miss the view finder for those situations where looking at the LCD screen is not practical. Also the new model is no longer carrying a Carl Zeiss lens.Sony HDR-CX520V 64GB Flash High Definition Camcorder (Black)

Sanyo VPC-FH1A Full HD Video and 8 MP Digital Photos (Black)

Forget all the negative reviews of this camera. For the money this camera can't be beat. It is easy to use and the HD and HR movies have incredible detail. Also, you only have to carry one camera since it takes pictures. Don't let the image fool you, this camera is very small! Also, the battery life is excellent. My dad has two newer HD Cannons and he said mine is better. Lastly, it works very well indoors. I would recommend a 16 GB chip as well, but an 8 GB chip will be sufficient for most people and will save money if your budget is tight.Sanyo VPC-FH1A Full HD Video and 8 MP Digital Photos (Black)

Veho VCC003MUVI Micro DV Camcorder

It is just amazing what this little gadget can do. I am in the technology industry, specifically security and surveillance, and have tested many of these kinds of devices. This unit provides a high quality image and still manages not to bust the budget. I found it easy to use and was very impressed with the amount of data stored on-board. Definitely would recommend this device for undercover or law enforcement purposes.Veho VCC003MUVI Micro DV Camcorder

Canon VIXIA HG21 AVCHD 120 GB HDD Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3I74H4G99VMB0 @ Everyone complaining about how poor this camcorder fares in a low-light condition should take a look at this test I conducted with the Canon Vixia HF11. Keep in mind that the HF11 and the HG21 both have the same specifications except that the HG21 has a 120GB HD, (which I care little about cause my 16GB class 6 flash drive will transfer the videos files to the PC HD faster than the built-in HD on the camera) and a viewfinder (the main reason I've returned the HF11). Before I got the HF11, I specifically looked for reviews (mostly videos) of the low-light performance of the camcorder and almost nearly everyone that had the video tests mentioned the Cinema mode as the best mode to use in a low-light condition.

Though, I'm still waiting for the HG21 to come in the mail but I can bet my last buck that if I ran the test today using the same settings I used for HF11 test, the outcome would be the same. Bottom line is, try the Cinema Mode and see for yourselves. By the way, someone posted a nice low-light condition video that they claim they shot in the Program AE mode. I didn't try that but it's worth the shot. I did tested other frame and bit rates on youtube; search man0war777 (zero between man and war). Peace!

PS: I only rated this camera (even though) I haven't tested it only because I can't post this review without doing so. Therefore, my comments are only based on the Canon Vixia HF11. . .just try the Cinema Mode and see the difference. Good luck y'all! Canon VIXIA HG21 AVCHD 120 GB HDD Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom

Canon VIXIA HF S10 HD Dual Flash Memory with 32 GB Internal Memory and 10x Optical Zoom

I bought this camera about 5 months ago because I heard the picture quality was great, which it is, but I also was intending on taking advantage of the 1/8th inch mic input in order to use a shotgun mic. Every time I use this feature an extremely loud beeping noise goes off when the access light blinks. Really really apparent and impossible to get any good audio. Other people seem to have the same problem: [...] . The audio attenuator helps a little but doesn't eliminate the problem. I called Canon and they basically said "that's how the camera is supposed to work." What?! Thanks Canon. Go with the Sony consumer HDs. I've never had any problems with them.Canon VIXIA HF S10 HD Dual Flash Memory with 32 GB Internal Memory and 10x Optical Zoom

Canon VIXIA HV40 HD HDV Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

This is the Crรจme de la Crรจme of prosumer video cameras when it comes to picture quality. In my experience, as of February 2010, no other brand or camcorder comes close to the video quality of HV40. Using a tape based video cassette recorder feels antiquated after giving up audio cassette tape recorder years ago for digital sound on MP3 player but I tried one hard drive AVCHD camcorder and I had to be return it because the grainy picture was way inferior to my previous Canon HV-20 camcorder. Those hard drive or DVD camcorders are not compatible with every software either. And as long as you keep Mini-DV's and the camcorder, you can play them for ever because software format keeps changing with time and the software format in vogue now may be outdated in future.

The major advance in this camera over its previous incarnations, HV-20 & HV-30, is the 24P in native & cinema modes, which makes the picture look like professional movie. Otherwise I do not find much difference from earlier versions.

PROS

1. 2.96-megapixel Full HD CMOS sensor captures sharp, bright, color saturated HD video and beautiful, color infused pictures on Mini SD card. Vivid images will just blow your mind. You can even capture still images from the tape.

2. DIGIC DV II image processor is fast.

3. Good image stabilization.

4. The controls are well placed and intuitive.

5. Regular mini-DV tapes Sony DVC-60 PR/5 Premium Minidv Videocassette (5-Pack) can be used with excellent results and you don't have to buy expensive HD Mini-DV tapes Sony High Definition Minidv Videocassette (2-Pack).

6. Good images even in low light and then there is built-in flash.

7. Works well with both iMovie & Final Cut Express on Mac.

CONS

1.This Canon HV40 camcorder does not come with any video editing software. The still picture Canon software is slow and basically useless and does not add much to built-in Windows or Mac software. You do not even need to install Canon photo software.

2. Needs a very powerful computer with Firewire port.

3. But does not come with a Firewire cable! Canon is selling this camera for one thousand dollars (MSRP) and they can't enclose a one dollar cable? Make sure you order 4-Pin to 4-Pin FireWire Cable with the camera. I bought one for less than a dollar Firewire DV Cable Camcorder For Canon Sony Sharp JVC and it does the job.

4. No separate battery charger and if you record for more than an hour at a time you may want to buy one extra and keep a charged one with you all the time.

5 .So many components - Canon HV-40 camera, battery, charger, cables, Mini-DV tapes etc. - but no bag to store and carry them with this one thousand buck camera! They want to pick your pocket for another fifty bucks for a Canon branded bag for this camera and its accessories. But I bought Zeikos ZE-CA48B Deluxe Soft Medium Camera and Video Bag for ten bucks and it is almost as good, if not better than, Canon VIXIA HV40 HG21 HG10 DC410 DC310 HV30 DVD Camcorder Canon ZR960 MiniDV dc220 dc320 dc100 dc210 Camcorder Case Bag Messager Bag.

6. Huge files on hard drive. For me the HD files are coming to almost 750 MB per minute on Final Cut Express. Make sure you have a huge hard drive to be able to use and edit the HD files recorded by Canon HV-40. But this drawback is probably with all HD camcorders. I use Western Digital My Book World Edition 1 TB Network Attached Storage WDH1NC10000N (White) which works flawlessly but now it has its big 2TB & 4TB brothers - go for the biggest one you can afford. You are going to need it for all the HD video that you will record with this camera.

7. Of course, you need a high-priced HDTV to enjoy all those videos in HD!

Overall Canon HV-40 camcorder is is the best in this category but you may want to look at one of those pocket Flip camcorders or its competitors before you buy Canon HV-40: you will probably use them more. They are lighter in weight and pocketable so you can have them with you more often. And they are very easy to use and upload recored files to computer or web sites. Now with new cell phones being able to record good quality video, even Flip video recorders are in the process of becoming obsolete. After all, the best camera is the one you have with you!

Now you can use Canon HV-40 to record on mini DV tape, watch it on TV and store the tape and not even bother to use the computer. But if you want to edit or upload the best quality HD video or you if you are the budding or amateur film-maker, no other camcorder can beat Canon HV-40 for picture quality. If you add all the other ancillary stuff needed to transfer, edit, store and view the HD video recorded by Canon HV-40 - a mighty computer with Terabytes of hard drive space - it is pretty expensive purchase. Canon HV-40 has so many advanced features that I have just skimmed the surface. I am not an advanced user but my son is a film maker and he loves this camera. For an average Joe or Jane, this camera is probably an overkill but its earlier editions, are only slightly less complicated to use and not not any cheaper than HV-40. Canon VIXIA HF S100 HD Flash Memory Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

This is my 4th camcorder purchase (in ~20 yrs), and the 2nd which records a digital signal. Overall, it is the fastest to respond, the cleanest and brightest in full daylight, and somewhat portable. There are negatives however, which had I known before, I wouldn't have purchased this camera. These are:

1 - Very very poor low and existing light image quality - terribly noisy!

(I haven't experimented much with manual mode to find a workaround.)

2 - Poor dynamic range, i.e. whites washed out and blacks muddled with noise

3 - A very reflective screen. In daylight, in certain reflecting angles, it is impossible to see anything but your own face reflecting back to you. When this happens, I can't even see the small red/green dot to see if in recording or standby mode!

4 - Uses the AVCHD format, the nature of which which is fraught with processing hurdles... meaning $$ to solve. Mo tape storage either.

5 - No optical viewfinder, which coupled with the reflective screen (no. 3 above), makes some outdoor situations near impossible.

6 - No output format other than 1920x1080. A 720 or an SD output would have been usable. (Note: There is a component output available at 480i. This doesn't help me tho.)

7 - Neither the SD card or the battery can be changed while this camera is attached to a tripod (and in my case even to the tripod plate.)

8 - The Canon wide angle lens blocks ~1/3rd of the light output from the small built-in light on this model. The external mount is not a standard mount, so my existing Canon external lights are not compatible. (I knew this going in tho.)

10- The built-in flash burns the skin of faces etc.

11- The ergonomics need much improvement (too long to get into in this review.)

That's it.

P.S. Hate being so negative, since I own several other Canon digital cameras (still cameras) which produce technically great shots.Canon VIXIA HF S100 HD Flash Memory Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

Flip Ultra Camcorder 2nd Generation, 120 Minutes (Yellow)

I bought this as a Christmas present for my boyfriend. The picture quality and ease of use are great, but the camera died within two months. It just would not turn on anymore. FLIP customer service is EXTREMELY slow, takes forever to get someone on the phone, and then after reporting the issue by phone we had to wait another 72 hours to hear from the higher level tech support people for a return number. Since it is within 90 days it is still covered by warranty so they will replace, but the customer has to pay the shipping on a defective product. This was disappointing, and I think the company should pay for the return, but otherwise, good product.Flip Ultra Camcorder 2nd Generation, 120 Minutes (Yellow)

Canon VIXIA HF20 HD Dual Flash Memory with 32 GB Internal Memory and 15x Optical Zoom

The Facts: Ordered Canon VIXIA HF20 from Amazon seller J&R Music World on 1/16/2009 for $599 and received it on 1/18/2009. Camera was defective. (Appeared to be defective CMOS--about 50 vertical lines running through images on screen and recorded movies.) J&R authorized an exchange and received camera back on 2/2/2009. Did not hear from them, so I called to follow up a week later. a J&R rep said the camera had not been 'inspected' yet. Another week passed, did not hear from them, called to follow up and a J&R rep said the camera was defective and a replacement would be sent within 5-7 days. When I inquired on availability, another J&R rep told me that the Canon VIXIA HF20 has been discontinued! A Canon rep immediately disputed that claim, and many other merchants offer this model. It has now been one month since I paid J&R for this camera and I have not received a single communication from J&R on the status of the transaction, besides those that I initiated.

My Opinion: In the age of lightening-fast internet transactions (and lightening-fast potentially negative feedback), J&R is a horrible dealer. They clearly have no concern for the customer on the other end of their transaction and they clearly have no hesitation to bank my cash without telling me the status of my now-month-old purchase. I suspect that since I haven't seen this item advertised for this low of a price since, they may be trying to renegotiate the deal or they may be pulling the 'ol bait-and-switch. I became suspicious when my pictures of the defective images were not sufficient proof for this seller to send me a replacement immediately--why else would I go to the trouble to exchange a brand new camera?! Either way, this appears to be a shady operation, at least from this customer's experience.

Can't rate the camera yet. Obviously I got a defective unit. That could happen to any electronics manufacturer. If I ever get a second one, I'll rate the camera then.Canon VIXIA HF20 HD Dual Flash Memory with 32 GB Internal Memory and 15x Optical Zoom

Canon VIXIA HF200 HD Flash Memory Camcorder with 15x Optical Zoom

The Vixia HF200 is our first video camera of any sort. We purchased this mostly to take vidoes of our first grandchild who we see almost daily. My wife and I found the HF200 extremely easy use and consequently, we take lots of short takes of our grandson doing something special in a moments notice. We have yet of miss a moment due to anything about the camera. The HD quality is excellent. If you want to view the video directly to your HD TV, I recommend the "Mini-HDMI Male to HDMI Male Cable: 6 ft - by Abacus24-7" which I purchased on Amazon as well.

Flip MinoHD Camcorder, 60 Minutes (Black)

The Flip Mino HD is an impressive little gadget. Its video quality is far beyond what you would expect from such a tiny device, and its small size and intuitive interface make sure it always claims a space in your pocket. I really can not say enough good things about this product's features.

However, I don't recommend buying one. Just four months after purchasing this camcorder BRAND NEW, it has stopped working entirely. It doesn't turn on, it doesn't show up on my computer, and it certainly doesn't record videos any more.

My camera is in flawless physical condition, so I am lead to believe that the innards of these devices are of very shoddy quality. I have scoured the internet and found many others facing the same situation I am. The manufacturer recommends that we place a paperclip in the reset button, which has not resolved the problem for myself or for thousands of others.

The warranty covers an unacceptable 90 days after purchase. This company must have very little confidence in this product to only offer support for 90(!) days. I doubt they are ever surprised to receive angry phone calls or product reviews.

In short, this is an impressive and fun to use product that unfortunately has a lifespan of about 3 months. For that reason, I do not recommend it.Flip MinoHD Camcorder, 60 Minutes (Black)

Flip UltraHD Camcorder, 120 Minutes (White)

I was really excited when I bought this camera. I have two young children and it was a perfect way to share video with family around the country. I take very good care of it. When it's not in use it's in my camera bag stored safe from harm. Imagine my surprise when it stopped working after 84 days. The camera simply wouldn't power on. I tried replacing the rechargeable battery with two double AA's. No luck. I put the rechargeable battery back in and plugged it into the charger. The charge light went on and the display said it was charging, but the level never got any higher. I left it on the charger overnight. Still no luck. Fortunately, the camera has a 90 day warranty, so I submitted a support request via Flip's website. They promise to respond to all emails within 4 hours during normal business hours. Sure enough, about 3 hours later I got a response:

Thank you for contacting us.

We would like you to try to reset the power mode on your Flip Ultra to see if we can resolve the issue. Please leave the batteries out of your camcorder for 48-72 hours to drain any residuals from the camcorder. Insert brand new batteries in the device. Does the device power on?

If this does not resolve your issue, please tell us when and where you purchased your camcorder so we can take the next appropriate steps.

We look forward to hearing from you.

I waited almost 72 hours, popped in new batteries. No luck. So, I responded to their email with all the information they requested, which I had also included in the original support request along with my serial number. That was 2/11/10. It's now 2/17/10 and I've yet to hear from them. I've emailed several times and updated my original support request several times.

I'm a pretty easy going guy and have never written a negative review of anything before. But this experience really burns my biscuits! I will not buy another Flip product.
